Demantoid is a rare, attractive green variety of andradite garnet well known to gemstone collectors. The rich green colour is derived from trace amounts of chromium. Demantoid was discovered in Russia in 1868 during the reign of Alexander 11. Much of the finer material still comes from the Ural Mountains. It was held in such high regard that it became the gemstone of choice in many
